Many people use HootSuite and other similar tools to pull posts from one Social Media tool to another….
I personally do not use them.
The main problem is that anyone who likes you business page on Facebook and follows you on Twitter will see duplicate posts. The same can happen if they are your friend on Facebook and follow your page. You don’t want to annoy anyone by filling up their newsfeeds with duplicate posts.
As well, Twitter often will cut off the posts from your Facebook updates in a bad spot because they are too long. Your “tweets” pulled from Facebook will also have an fb.link following it, so many people will not click because they perceive that you are not really tweeting. Some posts also look awkward and often don’t make sense, when pulled from one tool to another.
Personally, I prefer to make posts that are just for Facebook, and tweets that are just for Twitter. It is more personalized and it won’t give your followers the feeling that you are not really engaged with them, and then deciding to unfollow or unlike you.
Remember Social Media is all about building relationships and engagement, so take the time and effort and it will pay off.

I have seen many people put this status up on their Facebook profiles in the past couple of days…
“PLEASE DO ME A FAVOR: Please hover over my name here, wait for the box to load and then hover over the “Subscribe” link. Then un-check the “Comments and likes” and ‘games’ choices. I would rather my comments on friends’ posts not be made public. **THANKS** Then re-post if you don’t want your EVERY MOVE posted on the right for everyone to see.”
Rather than make this request to each friend, remember that only friends can see your posts and comments, if that is how you have set your privacy settings.
The new Subscribe button allows others that are not your friends to see your posts and comments. You have to allow this function.
To unallow Subscribers, to your profile:
- Click the Subscribers link on the left menu
- Click the Edit Settings button in the top right
- Subscribers: Click “Off” so people outside of your friends cannot subscribe to your public updates.
Why would I want people to subscribe to my profile?
By default, all your friends are already subscribed to your profile, that is nothing new. They already were able to see all your status updates before the upgrade. However, You can fine-tune the types of posts from someone you see. Hover your mouse over the Subscribe button on someone’s profile to customize what types of posts you see from them.
Use the Subscribe button to choose what you see from friends and others in News Feed. For each person, you could hide all game stories, see just photos, limit updates to life events and more.
The Benefit of the Subscribe button
If you are a business or organization, you can only have a Business page, if you are a public figure that wants to share your updates with a larger audience you may benefit from allowing Subscribers. If you are already using your personal profile page on Facebook for professional purposes, the subscriber option can work well in conjunction with (or as an alternative to) an official Business Page.
As a professional, this feature allows other Facebook users to find and connect with you on a more personal level, while still giving you control and privacy over certain posts that you may want to share only with family and close friends.
Facebook is going head-to-head with Google+ in it’s attempt to get users to post publicly. Time will tell whether people will “subscribe” to this new feature.
Do you think the Facebook Subscribe button is a good move by the company? and will you be using it?

Since the beginning of May, I have been searching for a new job as my term ended at Carleton University. I was the Web Facilitator for the CMS Migration Project. I loved my job and the people I worked with and learned from. The aspect of the job that I enjoyed the most was meeting many interesting people on campus, both staff and faculty. Making connections is what really drives me. That is why have such a passion for social media, the connection with others.
During my job search, it has been social media that not only made professional connections for me, but also personal connections, as I have been home with my kids, and conversations with other adults is needed…for sanity.
I am still working
on my personal brand, but I am also trying to enjoy the summer with my kids. I am trying not to get stressed out about finding a job NOW! I know this time with my children is precious and short-lived. I will be back to work soon and they will be back to school, and life will be hectic again.
I do know that I enjoy teaching others and helping them in their own journeys. That is why I decided to host some Social Media Workshops for the Smiths Falls Chamber of Commerce in the Fall. I am going to use this time now to prepare myself for the workshops and get my brand further developed before that time.
I believe hosting the workshops will be a great opportunity for myself, to get more well known in the area and to learn more about the community and about social media and it’s use in small business online marketing. I am really looking foreword to them, and I will post more about them in the near future.

In the past month, I have been searching for the career that I really want to do. I have been using all my sources, from my friends, to former colleagues, to former and current classmates. Most of them I have contacted using social media.
The first thing that I did was to update my LinkedIn profile. I had been using it, but it still wasn’t 100% complete. I added several more connections of people that I had worked with, and asked for a few to give me a recommendation. I updated my status to make sure everyone knew I was looking for a new job. I contacted an old college friend, as she was now the Director of Marketing at a company that I wanted to work for. We ended up going for lunch and discussing business, after catching up on our personal lives.
I became more activite on my Twitter account as well. Starting by following more people that I could learn from, and businesses that I would like to work with. Many companies post job opportunities on Twitter.
Now, I have developed my own blog. To get my personal brand more known, as I forge my way in a new direction.
